Perceptions of safety (aka. Princess' paranoia)
Is it weird that whenever I walk home alone later at night, I spend a good chunk of my walk contemplating the various ways I could killed or be harmed within that short journey?

I wouldn't worry about it... you can just as easy get stabbed on the bus these days.
I'm not entirely sure that your estimation follows just as well for a woman walking on her own, truthfully. I've already had a few minor sketchy experiences when going home on my own-- one in the middle of the day, though!
I do the same too. I think of every possible situation I can get into then I think of the best escape route.
I also always end up carrying my keys in between my fingers...just in case.
Pie... that's pretty much it. I also pay a ridiculous amount of attention to the people who walk by (I need to remember when I describe them to the police or listen for their footsteps), while trying to look as nonchalant as possible. Yikes!
