Roar.
I almost felt guilty over writing a post about things that were pissing me off.
Then I got over it.
So, without further ado... I present to you today's shit list.
Dude on the train. Dude, the train was busy. I had to stand in front of you merely due to the placement of the pole. Contrary to your apparent beliefs, this does not make me your personal lapdancer. As such, the blatant slow up-down-up-down humping-me-with-your-eyes leer was not appreciated. Show some damn restraint.
Rolling backpacks. Really? How lazy have we gotten that we need wheels on the tiniest of bags? And how awkward are these things in a busy space??
Canada's Olympic medal count. *cringe*
Stir crazyness. I've taken the whole grad student identity far too seriously. At the moment, I've been stricken by remarkable number of clients not showing up for appointments with me (I guess sunshine is more appealing than psychological assessments-- who knew?). I am also doing a lot of waiting-- for my supervisor to get back from a month away from email, for a revised manuscript from another prof, etc, etc. This leaves me with not much to do until the emails and clients start rolling in... but feeling too guilty to fully take time off pre-holidays. So I have been wasting time on stupid, uninvolving tasks, like reading articles that may be useful in the future, and generally going stir crazy when stuck in my lab or my office. I wish I could either be busy or be comfortably on holidays-- not some weird guilt-induced limbo!
Limping. This story epitomizes my lack of grace. I have been going to the gym a few times a week for the past three or so month. Yet, we get a Wii fit, and I don't stretch well before using it, and end up seriously straining my quad.
That's right-- I hurt myself on a videogame, rather than at the gym.
And now I have a sexy limp.
The worst thing about a limp is that you can't help but try not to limp-- which not only makes you hyperaware of the usually automatic motions of walking, but usually makes the limp that much more exaggerated.

We're out of town this weekend for a wedding and a mini-holiday. I have actually suggested the unthinkable... that we leave our laptops behind. I don't know if we are 100% on board, but I kind of like the idea of something keeping me away from email and blogs, and forcing me to read a book or take a walk instead.

I hear you on the bangs. Although I call it a fringe.
And good idea to leave the laptop. I think everyone needs a break every so often... My last one was not by choice, but it was still good for me, I think!
I just loved the post - these are the things you bitch about with your galpal over a latte. u just need to let it out.
A laptop free weeked? wow, u rebell you! Have fun at the wedding.
cheers
ha great post. ugh that guy on the train sounds terrible. i hope you gave him a don't mess with me glare. have a good weekend!
Ah, the pork chop stare. Hate! A hungry gaze is flattering, but take it a little too far and you're staring at me like all you need is some silverware and some applesauce. Gross.
Wii Fit can actually be kind of dangerous. I had to put mine in time out for being mean to my poor aching body.
At my company, I see more people going with rolling laptop bags and get this- rolling purses.
Laziness at its finest.
Ohhh leave the laptop behind! You'll be so much more well-rested and be so glad you did once the hyperventilating stops!
You got a limp from the Wii fit? Now that's what I call awesome. At least you can brag about it to people who ask.
you should definitely leave the laptop behind. you need a break!
Nice vent session. Have a nice weekend away!
I loathe those damn rolling backpacks too!
Personally, I think we should just go ahead and put wheels on everything.
Just eliminate any physical activity what-so-ever.
Ok first of all, I definitely don't see anything wrong with writing about "things that were pissing you off." It's probably a safe way to rant.
Second. You poor thing! Injuring yourself while playing a video game? Next time I bet you'll stretch extra! ;)
And it sounds like you're doing something other than Grad work...you're going for a mini-holiday!!! And as difficult as it is, perhaps even torture-like, to leave behind the laptop and the blogs...it will do you good. I support you! Though I have the hardest time doing this myself!!! ;)
I may or may not have played Wii Fit the day before I went on a hike. It was a VERY poor choice. That game, whether we like to admit it or not, is...exercise (gasp!!) I know! They tricked me, and apparently they got you too!
Hope the weekend is good.
I definitely share some of the same feelings when I think about writing a rant post, but I have admit- I do love reading them! As for Canada's medal count, I was listening to the radio the other day when people were going nuts about it. The DJ raised a good point saying the US spends more on it's swim team than we do on ALL OUR EVENTS combined. That sort of put things into perspective for me. I mean, it still stinks but it makes me even more excited for Vancouver. Where you KNOW there will be medals.
That means you will not be reading blogs all weekend?? Hmph.
I'm hardly on the computer at all on weekends. I spend enough time in my cubicle staring at the monitor during the week that it's usually the last thing I want to do on my days off.
So I say, leave the laptop at home!
Wow I need to do one of these because my shit list is huge. I love that your bangs are on there. That's awesome.
Glad you're taking a break; you made need the rest! I'll miss you, but not your greasy bangs, haha. This post cracked me up (sorry) :)
muggy weather plus hair is a bad combination. is it supposed to be that hot when i'm there?
Hope you left the laptop! I do that now when I go away and I never miss the email or the blogs (well..I miss the blogs a little bit)
So... the wii fit really works huh?
A break from technology is good.
Connect with the flesh and blood around you, it'll make you happy, and it will make everyone else happy too.
remember: nothing wrong with a princess who posseses a few sweet curves.
Have fun!
eughhhh tell me about the creep-o's on transit. luckily it's slightly better here in Melbs (but only during the weekday commute, night time is just as bad)
i sometimes relish being without my laptop - like when i was in barcelona a couple of weekends ago, i missed it a bit, but it let me concentrate on just having a good time, and catching up on my reading, without it. i find that if i put my laptop on "just for a couple of minutes" on a weekend or when i get home from work, i tend to not put it off again. so sometimes it's easier to just not have access to it!
Silly question maybe- what's a bang?
Oh, and I had a similar thing on a train- from a guy.
Which didn't exactly flatter me either. Especially since I happen to be male.
Hope you had a lovely weekend away to make up for your Friday grumbles!
haha. bangs. so wrong to say this in the UK. I just got some (do you say some bangs?) cut. Luckily we soo dont get the weather you do otherwise id be experiencing the fringe stuck to head malarky too...
the bang thing, is so frustrating. I understand .
the bangs drive me nuts. I loved having them when i was right out of the shower, but then they would never lay the way i wanted them to and i ended up looking like an asshole.
sigh.
I vote for leaving the laptops - it's always nice to unplug once in awhile!
"...a sexy limp", I never knew there was such a thing! Congrats on rocking with it anyway. Enjoy your weekend away!
amen on the medal count. but at least we're no longer sitting on a big fat goose egg.
also: what's a book? haha
I say good call on the laptop/weekend thing. Also, I cannot necessarily say "I've been there!" but I can say, I fully acknowledge your frustrations. The end!
I'm supposed to be nice in these comments, right? And, er, not call you a Genuine Wuss for getting a limp off the Wii?
If so, I'll need to compose a new comment.
I've been keeping a fairly close eye on the Canadian Olympic medal count, and it's not looking too impressive at the moment is it! Unlike ours (for a change), can't believe we're 3rd at the mo!
And what on EARTH are "Bangs"!?
