The amateur epicurean
Sometimes I can understand how my adamantly single friends view coupledom as a little pathetic. However, I do not apologize for finding joy from a Sunday afternoon spent in a fresh food market. Holding hands while choosing grapefruit, getting lost in towers of peaches and splurging on elaborate cheeses can be just as lovely as a candlelit dinner.
These situations bring out the unapologetic domestic in me. As we speak, I am alternating between trimming the ends off green beans, twisting the lids off spices, crushing garlic. Sure, we are likely to end up with plates on our laps in front of the television. However, in the midst of a swirl of bills, emails, deadlines, invitations, it feels refreshing to focus on something as hedonistic as a good meal.
Now, if you'll excuse me, the chili-garlic green beans are waiting.

Note: You are one of my most favorite cooks. Just because you make me eat things I normally would not touch. The end.
Also. My word is "exivict." That sounds like it should or could be legitimate.
I too love a great Sunday afternoon market.
Too bad AB's least favourite thing in the entire world is grocery shopping... even the cool-groceries on Ganville Island, or in the Vic Market here. I have to go with my foodie friends instead.
Chili-garlic green beans? Sounds good and what a great way to spend a Sunday!
That sounds unbelievably fantastic. Enjoy the beans!
Love this! I never saw the market as romantic. Mainly just cold. Glad you're able to savor the moment.
*Sigh*
Of envy? Quite probably.
Sounds yummy.
And just for the record, this is probably the only thing I envy from coupledom.
This and kisses.
The kisses are good too. :)
I couldn't agree more- it's the little day to day things that are boring on your own but fantastic when you're happy to be nesting down with someone. Love the sound of the beans too- delicious.
Sounds lovely - it is wonderful to enjoy an open air market on a Sunday afternoon...
Now that sound gorgeous. We have pig rolls at our farmer's market. yum
I wish I was in a couple that appreciated these things. Our Sunday afternoon was spent in bed catching up on the DVR. :)
Those are the moments you don't see in movies often because they are so simple that Hollywood can't understand that they are the moments that makes a relationship last
aww que romantique! I came home from my weekend job, and hte house was EMACULATE!!! I mean, it was CLEAN. Duke had busted out the steam vac and everything. I don't think I've ever been more in love!
Or roaming around in SoHo looking for cool bits of art for the new apartment!
I love this post, I spent yesterday cooking lunch with my boyfriend and going for a wee walk in the park - it was such a special time - it's all about the simple pleasures!
Chili garlic green beans?
yes please.
Chili Garlic Green Beans?
Okay, now it's *your* turn to share a recipe!
coupledom is totally not pathetic, and I am 100$ single, heh. ;)
I don't think it's pathetic. In fact, I'm rather jealous . . .:(
And a very blissful way to get past the elections and back to real life!
don't feel guilty about it! embrace it!!
"getting lost in towers of peaches and splurging on elaborate cheeses"
If thats what you call it when you are a couple I will have to learn these new sex phrases.
You describe exactly the situation I spend my whole life striving to avoid.
I just got done making sweet thai chili stir fry with chicken and vegetables.
Yumsicles.
You had me until the green beans friend. YUCK.

You've got an award hun! xo
Mmmmmm ... chili garlic green beans. I'm kinda hungry now.
Aw that sounds like a great day! Those are the things I miss about a relationship when I'm not in one. :(
It's the simple things in life that mean the most and remind us that in our fast paced world, slowing down is okay.
So, so true! Sure, my life may be just a bit boring-er (yes, I know it's not a word) now that I am happily coupled up ... But it's a very, very happy "boring" that I wouldn't change at all!
That is the perfect way to spend a weekend day!
Agreed! I spent a good portion of my Sunday in a grocery store with my boy of choice, and then he cooked for me. Couldn't have imagined a better way to spend the day. =)
you make the whole R word thing sound not so bad. ;)
great post - I totally agree :)
I refuse to apologize for finding joy in something so simple :)
Being single isn't all bad...we may not have chili-garlic green beans, but we have our fun too!
